Abstract

For the past three years, the Centre for Information Policy Leadership at Hunton & Williams LLP has served as secretariat for the Accountability Project. The Accountability Project is the work of an international group of experts that includes representatives of privacy enforcement agencies from Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region; civil society; academia and business. Its mission is to consider how an accountabilitybased system of data protection might be designed. The inquiry originally focused on cross-border data transfers, but expanded to address how to apply accountability to improve compliance with privacy requirements and to enable more flexible information management. This paper reflects the discussions and findings of the Accountability Project, and is intended solely to serve as a report of the work of that initiative
